The opportunities: Potential for growth
Ecotourism and sustainable development: Mozambique possesses vast natural assets, including extensive coastlines, pristine coral reefs, and recovering wildlife in national parks like Gorongosa. There is a growing global demand for eco-friendly travel, which Mozambique is well-positioned to meet through community-based tourism and preserving its biodiversity.
Targeted investment in infrastructure: The government is focusing on public-private partnerships to develop infrastructure in key tourism areas. This includes airport expansions and upgrades to roads and railways that improve access to tourist destinations. A prime example is the new jetty being built on Inhaca Island to boost visitor access.
Improved market access and visa processes: Recent measures have streamlined entry for international tourists. The government approved visa exemptions for citizens of 29 countries in 2024, and though an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) was temporarily suspended, visa-on-arrival and e-visa systems are available.
Growing MICE and business travel sectors: While the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector is still developing, it shows potential. Business travel is also increasing, driven by developments in the country’s natural gas industry, creating opportunities for the hospitality sector.
Resilient domestic tourism: The focus on building more accessible and affordable facilities for local residents creates a stable source of tourism revenue, helping to mitigate international market fluctuations.
Promotional events and international forums: Mozambique’s hosting of events like the first International Tourism Conference in Inhambane and the Africa Diplomatic Tourism and Investment Forum in Maputo in 2025 aims to attract foreign investors and promote the country on the world stage.
Luxury tourism development: Major luxury investments, such as Aman Resorts entering the market in late 2025, signal high-end growth and showcase Mozambique’s potential to compete with other top luxury destinations.
