Vilanculos — quick history, today, and what’s coming for tourism & hospitality

Vilanculos — often written Vilankulo — is Mozambique’s sunlit gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Named after Chief Gamela Vilankulo, the town has evolved from a quiet fishing settlement into a busy departure point for pristine island dives, dhow cruises and beachfront lodges. Visitors come for the turquoise reefs, the chance to see dugongs and turtles, and the relaxed fishing-village vibe that still lingers along the shoreline.

In recent years Vilanculos has moved upmarket: domestic and regional flight connections have improved, new scheduled routes make trips easier, and international operators have announced investment plans in the Bazaruto area — moves that will bring more luxury guests and higher-value itineraries. At the same time the town is hosting sustainability dialogues and conferences, a sign that conservation is becoming central to future growth.

For tour operators and hoteliers the window is open: build memorable, conservation-led experiences (reef-friendly diving, community cultural visits), improve transfer reliability to island lodges, and package Vilanculos with inland safari routes to create longer, higher-value stays. Done right, Vilanculos can grow sustainably — protecting the reefs that make it special while bringing more opportunity to local communities.
