Maputo National Park (formerly known as Maputo Elephant Reserve)

Established in 1932 and spanning approximately 1,040 km², Maputo National Park is located in the Matutuíne District of Maputo Province, Mozambique. The park boasts diverse ecosystems, including coastal forests, wetlands, savannahs, and pristine beaches along the Indian Ocean. It is renowned for its population of around 400 African bush elephants and a variety of other wildlife.

Location & Access

  • Distance from Maputo: Approximately 80–100 km southeast of Maputo city.
  • Access Routes:
    • Via Katembe: Cross the Maputo Bay using the suspension bridge to Katembe, then drive south along the N200 road to the Futi Gate entrance
  • Vehicle Requirements: A 4×4 vehicle is essential due to sandy and uneven terrain. It’s recommended to reduce tire pressure to around 1 bar for better traction.

Wildlife & Activities

    • African bush elephants, giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and over 350 bird species, including the African fish eagle.
  • Activities:
    • Game Drives: Explore the park’s diverse habitats and observe wildlife in their natural settings.
    • Bird Watching: Ideal for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts.
    • Canoeing & Recreational Fishing: Available in the park’s lagoons.

Conservation Efforts

Maputo National Park is part of the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area, which spans Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini. Since 2010, over 5,385 animals, including species that had become locally extinct, have been reintroduced to the park. Efforts are ongoing to restore and protect the park’s biodiversity.
